What Perth people are putting in them
The biggest single reason is space the house cannot give you. Perth's newer suburbs are built on small lots with the house hard up against most boundaries, and the garage filled up years ago. Where your container actually comes from
We do not have a Perth yard, a Perth office or anyone in a hi-vis shirt with our name on it anywhere in WA, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Our Western Australian stock is held at a third-party container depot in Fremantle. That is where your unit is loaded, and it comes to you from there on a truck.
You can look the container over at the depot by arrangement — ring and we will set up a time. If a trip to Fremantle does not suit, we will send photographs of the actual unit on request, before delivery. Quotes and bookings go through the same phone number as every other state, and the phones are answered on Queensland time.

What to check before you order in Perth
Most Perth deliveries that go wrong go wrong for one of the reasons below. Every one of them is cheaper to sort out on the phone than on the morning of the drop.
Is the spot on sand, and has it been disturbed?
Perth is built on sand. Left alone, it carries a container well. Freshly dug, backfilled or loose on top, it lets a loaded tilt-tray sink to the axles and lets the box settle crooked after the first winter rain. If the spot used to be a garden bed or the hole for a pool, tell us. Four solid pads or a strip of compacted limestone under the corners is the simple fix.
Will it touch the verge, even for a day?
Across metro Perth the verge in front of your house is council land, and the rules about leaving anything on it differ from one local government to the next. If the container has to sit on the verge while you load it, or the truck has to stand on it to unload, ring your council first. It is a short call and it saves an awkward letter.
Battleaxe block or shared driveway?
Subdivided lots are everywhere in the older suburbs, and the handle of a battleaxe block is often only just wide enough for a car. Measure the narrowest point — gateposts, a meter box, a neighbour's fence — and check whether the driveway is shared. A truck parked across a shared driveway needs the neighbours told in advance.
What is overhead?
A tilt-tray raises its bed to slide the container off, which puts the high end of the tray well above anything a car needs. Power lines to the house, a patio roof, a carport, and old peppermints or jacarandas over the drive all come into it. One photo taken looking up from the drop spot answers the question.
Is it up in the hills?
Kalamunda, Mundaring, Gooseberry Hill, Roleystone and the rest of the scarp are a different job from the flat. Steep driveways, gravel over laterite, tight bends and trees. Some are fine for a tilt-tray; some need a crane truck parked on the road. Give us the address and a couple of photos and we will say which.
Which grade does the job need?
For storage you care about, buy cargo-worthy used or new single-trip — those grades are sold wind and watertight. As-is units cost less and are not sold watertight; they suit a lock-up under a roof or a base for a project. Tell us what is going in it and we will tell you which fits.

The Fremantle Doctor, and why it matters for doors
Most summer afternoons a strong south-westerly comes in off the ocean. It is welcome on the verandah and a nuisance for a container. A pair of steel doors swinging in a gusty sea breeze will take fingers, dent a car and bend their own hinges. Face the doors away from the south-west if the block lets you, and make sure they can be tied back when open.
The same breeze carries salt well inland through the western suburbs. Near the coast — Cottesloe, Scarborough, City Beach — rinse the container down now and then, touch up scratched paint before it turns to rust, and keep the door seals clean. It is five minutes of work that adds years to the box.

Hot summers inside a steel box
A Perth summer puts runs of hot days back to back, and an uninsulated container sitting in full afternoon sun gets far hotter inside than the air around it. That is no problem for tools, timber and garden gear. It is a problem for paint, aerosols, batteries, candles, vinyl records and anything held together with glue or a rubber seal.
Vents at each end help more than people expect. Shade helps more again, so the south side of the house is worth a lot. If you plan to work inside it, line and insulate it — the difference in February is enormous.
Getting the truck to the spot
A tilt-tray needs a straight run in, firm ground and room to lift the bed. For a 20ft that means a clear stretch a good deal longer than the container itself, plus the length of the truck. Most Perth homes with an ordinary driveway and a gate wide enough for a car can take a 10ft or 20ft this way.
Infill blocks, tight cul-de-sacs and rear laneways are where a side loader earns its keep, because it sets the container down beside the truck rather than behind it. Where there is simply no way in, a crane truck lifts it over the house or the fence. A 40ft needs a site where a long truck can line up with plenty of clear ground; most suburban blocks cannot take one, most industrial yards can.

No. We have no yard or office in WA. Perth stock is held at a Fremantle container depot run by a third party, and you can inspect a unit there by arrangement. If the trip does not suit, ask and we will send photos of the specific container before delivery.
How soon can you get a container to me?
It comes down to what is at the depot that suits your job and what your access needs. You will get an honest read when you ring, and the date is locked in when you order. If you are working to a settlement or the end of a lease, say so at the start.
Can a container sit on my verge?
Only if your council allows it, and Perth's local governments each set their own rules for the verge. Ring yours before the truck is booked. We would rather you checked than guessed.
Will it rust near the beach?
Any steel box near the coast needs some care. A cargo-worthy or new container arrives painted and sound. Keep the paint intact, wash the salt off occasionally, and do not let sand and leaves pile against the bottom rails. Neglected, it rusts; looked after, it lasts a very long time.
Do I need approval to keep one in the backyard?
Possibly. Whether a container needs approval depends on your local government, how long it is staying and what it is used for, and Perth councils do not all treat it the same way. Call the planning counter before delivery, not after.
