Cane country is kind until the last couple of hundred metres
Stock held for Mackay is matched to the length and the grade, and the delivery is quoted to the headland, not to the town. A cane block at Marian is a different last kilometre from a yard in town, and the Whitsunday addresses are a longer day again.

Valley
Narrower roads, shorter drives, cane rail
North Mackay, South Mackay and Mount Pleasant sit in 4740 with the city. Marian is 4753, Mirani 4754, Finch Hatton 4756 further up. Toward the valley the road narrows, shoulders fall away, and driveways get shorter and steeper. Cane-rail crossings turn up where a driver new to the district would not expect them.
Wet
A fortnight can retire a track
A fall that would be a talking point further south will stop a loaded truck on a headland it used two weeks earlier. We move the day. Cattle blocks inland of town use the same shell for fodder and station gear, on ground that can look baked and then fail. Sarina is 4737, Koumala 4738.
Damp
Gear comes out wet when no rain got in
Warm, wet air trapped in a shut box condenses on the ceiling and drips. The roof can be intact. Ventilation, pallets, and not storing damp tarps inside are what cut it back. It is worse in the months the humidity sits, and it is a reason to say if the contents are paperwork, clothing or chemicals rather than steel fittings.
Beaches
Bucasia is not a farm entry
Bucasia and Shoal Point are 4750. Seaforth and Pinnacle are 4741, Calen 4798. Beach and acreage blocks add salt and tighter side access. The cane farms are the volume, and they can usually take a container if the last stretch agrees. Tell us about rail crossings and the last time the headland carried a heavy axle. Town yards are the simple version.

What decides whether a cane headland will carry the truck?
How it looked after the last heavy fall, whether a drain is hidden in the grass, and if a rail crossing sits on the way in. Dry crust over wet is a no. We would rather wait than cut the headland up.
What happens if the Pioneer district is under a proper wet?
The day moves. From December into March a track that worked a fortnight ago can close. Town hardstand may still be fine. Say which one you are so we do not treat a Marian headland as a Paget yard.
Why does stored gear come out damp when no rain got in?
Condensation. Humid air, cold steel, drips on the ceiling. Vents and pallets do more than a new coat of paint. Daylight through the roof is a separate fault and a reason to swap the shell first.
