Rural blocks, straight answers.
What goes in a container on a rural block
The rural area is acreage country — bush blocks of a few hectares, hobby farms, mango orchards, market gardens growing tropical and Asian vegetables, and horse and cattle properties. A container on those blocks is the dry, lockable shed: tools, pumps and bore spares, feed, fertiliser, packing supplies for the fruit and veg, and the ride-on mower that keeps the grass down.
Plenty of rural households also use one as the first structure on a new block — somewhere secure for tools and materials while the house goes up. In Coolalinga and closer in around Howard Springs, it is more like suburban storage on a bigger lot.
No yard out here — the stock is in Berrimah
We have no yard or staff in the rural area or anywhere in the NT. Our Top End stock is held at a third-party depot in the Berrimah area, topped up off the wharf at East Arm. A container for the rural area is loaded there and trucked out.
You can arrange an inspection at the depot before it comes, or ask for photos of the exact unit on request, before delivery.

What to check before you order in Humpty Doo
On a bush block, what lies between the front gate and the spot decides the job. Walk it and check these.
Is the track passable in the wet?
Many rural driveways, and some local roads, are gravel or dirt, with floodways and low spots that fill in heavy rain. A track a ute handles in the wet may not take a loaded truck. If the delivery falls in the wet, be honest about the track and be ready to move the date or the spot.
How wide are the gates, and are there grids?
Measure the narrowest gate. Tell us about any cattle grids, and whether anyone knows what they will carry. A culvert under the driveway matters too.
Is there tall grass around the spot?
Late in the dry, tall grass — gamba, where it has got in — carries hot, fast fires. Keep a wide cleared area around the container, keep your firebreaks up to scratch, and think hard before storing fuel in it. A container is not a fire shelter and will not protect its contents from fire.
Is the spot on high ground?
Low parts of the rural area go under water in a big wet. Put the container on the highest firm ground available, on pads, with nothing important at floor level. Floodwater gets in at the door seals, and an empty container can float.
Where are the bore, the pipes and the power?
Bores, poly pipe and buried power runs are everywhere out here. Mark them and keep the truck's path well clear of them.
Which council are you under?
Most of the rural area — Humpty Doo, Howard Springs, Virginia, Berry Springs — is in Litchfield Council. Batchelor sits under the Coomalie council. Ask the right one, and a certifier if it is staying, before delivery.
Humpty Doo
Laterite, gravel and black soil
Much of the rural area sits on laterite gravel ridges — red, hard and firm when dry, and good footing for a container. In the low country near creeks and swamps, the soil can be dark, heavy and very soft through the wet.
Pick a spot on the gravel if you can. Level it, set the container on solid pads, and make sure water from the next storm will run past it rather than pool against it.
On the ground
Mango orchards and market gardens
On an orchard or market garden, place the container where it is useful at harvest — near the packing shed, clear of where trucks and tractors turn — and where a truck can reach it again if it ever needs moving.
Keep packing materials off the floor and the doors shut when not in use, because humidity and the odd visiting frog or snake come with rural storage up here. A cargo-worthy or new container, sold wind and watertight, keeps the rain off the cartons.
Worth knowing
Berry Springs, Batchelor and further out
South along the Stuart Highway, Berry Springs and Batchelor are further from the depot and have more unsealed roads and bush tracks. The same checks apply, with more weight on the road condition and whether the truck can turn around at your end.
Batchelor sits on the doorstep of Litchfield National Park, and many blocks around it are bush with big trees. Send photos of the driveway and the overhead clearance along it, and tell us about any creek crossings between the road and the spot.
Getting a truck onto a bush block
A tilt-tray needs a firm track, a straight approach at the drop spot and room above to lift the bed. Low branches along the driveway are common on bush blocks — look up.
A 40ft is possible on larger properties with firm, wide access and room to turn. It is a bigger truck, so the track has to be good the whole way in.
Out along the Arnhem Highway past Humpty Doo toward Middle Point and Lambells Lagoon, blocks get bigger and the roads rougher. Tell us exactly where the property is, what the last stretch of road is like, and whether there is a spot near the house the truck can reach without crossing soft ground.

Delivery is quoted with the container, for your block. It depends on how far out you are, the road in and the truck your site needs. There is no single rural-area figure — the quote gives you yours.

Do you have a yard in Humpty Doo?
No. We have no premises in the NT. Stock is held at a third-party depot in the Berrimah area. Inspection there can be arranged, or we send photos before delivery.
Will you come out during the wet season?
Yes, if the truck can reach the spot on firm ground. If your track floods or goes soft, we will talk about a better spot or a better date.
Is a container safe during a bushfire?
No. Do not shelter in one, and do not rely on it to protect what is inside. Keep the ground around it cleared and follow official fire advice.
Do I need approval from Litchfield Council?
It depends on your zoning, how long it stays and what it is for. Ask Litchfield Council — or the Coomalie council if you are around Batchelor — before delivery.
Can a container be the first thing on a new block?
Many people use one that way, as a lockable store while the house goes up. Check with the council whether anything applies, and put it where it will not be in the builder's way.
Is it too hot inside for a pump or generator?
Storing them is generally fine, but running an engine inside a closed container is not — it needs proper ventilation and exhaust away from the box. Drain fuel where you can before long-term storage, and keep the doors shaded if possible.
What grade for fruit cartons and packing gear?
Cargo-worthy or new, which are sold wind and watertight. As-is units cost less and are not sold watertight, so they are a gamble for cartons.
