What Albany and the Great Southern use them for
Albany's port moves grain and woodchips, and the farms behind it run sheep, cattle and crops over a wide stretch of country toward Mount Barker, Kendenup and the Porongurups. On those farms a container is a dry, lockable store for seed, fertiliser, shearing gear, fencing materials and workshop tools.
In and around town, from Middleton Beach and Spencer Park out to Little Grove, Lower King and Kalgan, it is household storage, boat and fishing gear, and builders' site boxes. Plenty of people retiring to the south coast use one to hold what did not fit in the smaller house.
No yard in Albany — the honest version
We have no yard, office or staff in Albany or anywhere in the Great Southern. Our WA stock sits at a third-party container depot in Fremantle, and an Albany order makes the full trip south by road.
That distance is exactly why we would rather you saw the unit first. You can inspect it at the Fremantle depot by arrangement if you happen to be in Perth, or we will send photos of the specific container on request, before delivery. Either way, you should know what is coming before it comes all that way.

What to check before you order in Albany
With a long haul in the mix, the aim is one trip that works. Go through these before you order.
Have you actually measured the spot?
Measure the space, not the gap you think you have. Add room to swing the doors fully and to walk around the container. Swapping a container in Albany for a bigger one is a long round trip, so check twice.
Is there granite under the surface?
Albany sits among granite — Mount Clarence, Mount Melville, the coast out toward Torndirrup — and many blocks have rock at or just under the surface. That makes for excellent footing and awkward levelling. Plan to build up the low corners with solid packing rather than dig.
Is the drop spot on a slope?
Many Albany blocks fall toward the harbour or the Sound. A tilt-tray needs a reasonably level area to set a container down without it skewing off the bed. Steep sites often become crane jobs.
Is the grade right for the rain?
Albany gets plenty of rain and drizzle through the cooler months and a lot of grey, damp days. For anything that has to stay dry, buy cargo-worthy or new single-trip — the grades sold wind and watertight. As-is is not sold watertight and is a poor fit for an exposed spot on the south coast.
Will the farm track take a loaded truck after rain?
Great Southern farm tracks over clay and gravel go soft through winter. Tell us about the track honestly, and be ready to shift the date if it has been wet.
Could the order be combined?
If a neighbour, a relative or another part of your business also needs a container, say so. Two units travelling together on a long run is always worth asking about.

Damp air, condensation and a steel roof
The south coast is mild but moist. Cool nights, sea air and long runs of damp weather mean a sealed steel box collects condensation under its roof and drips it onto whatever is stored below. It is the commonest complaint about containers in cool, wet places, and it is fixable.
Fit vents at both ends so air can move. Keep stored goods off the floor on pallets and away from the walls. Do not lock away wet gear. For a workshop or anything you will spend time in, line and insulate the roof — that stops most of the drip.
On the ground
Salt wind off the Southern Ocean
Southerly weather comes straight off the Southern Ocean, and anything near Middleton Beach, Emu Point or the Torndirrup side cops salt spray on the wind. Watch the paint, especially at the bottom rails, the door gear and anywhere water sits.
Point the doors away from the prevailing weather where the block allows, so rain is not driven against the seals all winter. A container sitting on pads, with air moving under it, lasts far longer here than one sitting in wet grass.
Worth knowing
West to Denmark and Walpole: forest country
West of Albany toward Denmark, Nornalup and Walpole the country turns to karri and tingle forest, with high rainfall, narrow winding roads and steep driveways cut into the hillside. A block that is easy in a ute can be a real problem for a truck carrying a container.
If you are out that way, send photos of the driveway from the road all the way to the spot, and of anything overhead along it. Tell us whether the surface is gravel or bitumen and how it behaves after rain. Some of these properties are best served by a spot near the front gate rather than up at the house, and it is far better to agree that on the phone than to find it out on the day.
Access at an Albany address
On a standard suburban block with a straight driveway, a tilt-tray places a 10ft or 20ft easily. Older, steeper blocks around the town centre and the slopes of Mount Clarence may need a crane truck parked on the street.
Farm deliveries need firm, wide access and somewhere to turn. A 40ft suits most farms if the track and gateways allow it — but tell us about every gate, grid and culvert between the road and the spot.

Why don't you have a yard in Albany?
Because we are not a local business, and we would rather say so than dress it up. WA orders are supplied from stock at a Fremantle depot operated by a third party. You can inspect there by arrangement, or have photographs sent before delivery.
Is it worth bringing a container all the way to Albany?
If you need secure, dry storage and there is nothing suitable closer, yes. Get the size and grade right and sort out the access first, so it is a single trip. We will tell you honestly if something about the job does not add up.
Can I stop condensation inside?
You can cut it right back. Vents at both ends, goods off the floor and away from the walls, nothing put away wet, and an insulated roof if you are using it as a workspace.
Do I need approval from the City of Albany?
It depends on your zoning, how long it will stay and what it is for, and rural and residential lots are treated differently. Check with the City of Albany — or the Shire of Plantagenet or the Shire of Denmark if you are on their side — before you order.
